About Kitab Mahal

Established in 1951, KITAB MAHAL stands as one of Odisha’s most trusted and enduring names in the world of academic books and publishing. Founded by the visionary Late Shri Jagadish Chandra Khandai, the journey began as a modest bookstore serving the bright minds of Ravenshaw College.
In its earliest days, Shri Khandai’s dedication was unmatched. Every weekend, he would travel to Kolkata (then Calcutta) to personally source quality academic books for his customers. During his absence, such was the trust he built that loyal students from Ravenshaw College would voluntarily manage the shop—an early testament to the deep relationships and goodwill that define KITAB MAHAL even today.

As the business grew, so did its vision. What began as a retail bookstore soon evolved into a publishing house, producing academic titles that became widely popular among students. KITAB MAHAL expanded its reach by supplying books to leading colleges and universities across Odisha, becoming a dependable academic partner for generations of learners.

The second generation, led by Mr. Chandra Kanta Khandai and later joined by Mr. Saumya Kanta Khandai in the 1970s, played a pivotal role in scaling the business. Their efforts strengthened the publishing division, expanded institutional supply, and enhanced the retail experience.

In 1984, they established Kitab Mahal Agencies near the Badambadi Bus Stand in Cuttack, creating a robust wholesale network to serve bookstores across the state.

Continuing this legacy, the third generation has ushered KITAB MAHAL into a modern era. In 2013, a landmark 12,000 sq. ft. fully air-conditioned showroom was opened at College Square, Cuttack, near Ravenshaw University—symbolizing both growth and a deep-rooted connection to its origins.
Today, KITAB MAHAL remains committed to its founding values—trust, quality, and service to education—while continuously evolving to meet the needs of new generations. With over seven decades of legacy, it proudly continues to elevate education since 1951.
