Our Legacy
Founded in 1951 by the visionary Late Shri Jagadish Chandra Khandai, KITAB MAHAL began as a humble bookstore serving the students of Ravenshaw College.
With extraordinary dedication, Shri Khandai personally travelled every weekend to Kolkata (then Calcutta) to source academic books. In his absence, trusted students from the college often managed the store—reflecting the deep relationships and trust that became the foundation of the brand.
From Bookstore to Institution
What started as a small retail outlet soon evolved into a leading academic publisher and supplier.

Second Generation Expansion
In the 1970s, the founder’s vision was carried forward by his sons:
- Mr. Chandra Kanta Khandai
- Mr. Saumya Kanta Khandai
Their leadership expanded:
· Publishing operations
· Institutional & library supply networks
· Retail presence across Odisha
In 1984, they established Kitab Mahal Agencies, a wholesale division near Badambadi Bus Stand, Cuttack—strengthening distribution across the state.
Modern Transformation
The third generation has brought a modern vision while preserving the legacy.In 2013, KITAB MAHAL launched a landmark:12,000 sq. ft. Fully Air-Conditioned Showroom, located at College Square, Cuttack, near Ravenshaw University, this space reflects:
